Making Time - Secondhand Watches

Just like driving a new car off the garage forecourt, most new wristwatches drop in value the moment you leave the shop.

That is why buying a secondhand watch at auction is a great way of clinching a deal!

Vintage wristwatches have stood the test of time and recent auction results prove that there is a vibrant market for pre-loved timepieces. Vintage wristwatches have stood the test of time and recent auction results prove that there is a vibrant market for pre-loved timepieces.
The more exclusive and well-respected a watch brand is, the better they will hold their value on the secondhand market. As luxury brands increase their retail prices, more and more buyers are driven to auctions, where quality watches are accessible on a lower budget. This is good news for buyers, sellers and auctioneers too!

If you do your research beforehand, vintage watches can be a great investment. Currently the market is crying out for stainless-steel gentleman’s wristwear. Surprisingly, steel Rolex Sports watches can actually achieve more than a gold model, due to style and wearability. Condition obviously affects the prices achieved; a mint example with the box and paperwork is always going to be more desirable than a well-worn piece.

The brands to really watch out for are:

• Rolex

• Patek Philippe

• Audemars Piguet

• Jaeger-LeCoultre

• Vacheron Constantin

• Brietling
